Have You Seen My…Umm…Memory? by Miller Caldwell is a wonderful self-help book for anyone with memory problems.
Dementia is an increasing concern in our ageing society. And although keeping generally healthy with good food and exercise, both mental and physical, and avoiding the obvious culprits of drugs, alcohol and other excesses, it’s a condition that seems to strike without too much regard for one’s lifestyle.
Miller Caldwell was the highly educated and well respected head of department and reporter to the children’s panels in Kilmarnock, Ayr and Dumfries; and chair of three other organisations. When he started to forget details of the children he was representing and noticed other minor confusions, he thought it was stress and made an appointment with his doctor expecting to be ‘signed-off’ for a well-deserved rest! ….
But the result of his several appointments with his GP was somewhat different to that expected. Miller was diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). It seemed that two specific medical incidences a few years earlier had resulted in damage to his short-term memory and the problem had rapidly deteriorated.
Miller had no option but to resign from all aspects of his then professional working life. This was 2003. Miller was only 52 years old!
A new career
For many, this would have been the beginning of the end. But for Miller, it was the beginning of a new carer as a writer which has not only kept him busy, but also improved his memory and health.
“In summer this is my local walk
Which helps to clear my mind
While thoughts of plots and characters
Ferment down deep inside.
Am I that dusty Miller
Who once made the daily bread
Now find myself a writer
Working at a desk instead?”
Miller H Caldwell.
Miller has now written many Novels, Biographies, Children’s Books, Self Help Books and Film Scripts. Quite an amazing achievement for someone who has short-term memory loss and often confuses the names of his wife, sister and daughters!
To achieve this, Miller has put in place many self-help techniques. These are detailed in his wonderful little book:
Have You Seen My…Umm…Memory?
I absolutely loved this little book. I think everyone should read this book a) to gain a better insight into the condition; and b) to learn practical self-help ideas. Although this isn’t just about dementia. We are all different and some have a much better memory than others. There are tools that can be used, and Miller also includes a section to help students remember their studies in readiness for exams.
Not only will this book prove to be invaluable for many sufferers and those who care for them, it is such a fun little book to read! Miller sites many situations that we can all relate to and there are many laughs along the way.
The self-help tips really are common sense and something we should all utilise.
I spoke with Miller on the phone a little while ago. He said he had just returned from a long walk, but he didn’t get lost because ‘the dog knew the way!’ Now there’s a thought……
