Get Creative with Outside In this summer, a free outdoor drama project for young people.
Elevator Arts has joined forces with mental health & environmental charity Trust Links to launch Outside In this summer, a free drama & wellbeing project for young people aged 10-15 from 6-12 August. Outside In is a chance for young people to get outside, get creative & express themselves.
The project, which is supported by National Lottery funding via the Arts Council England, aims to help support mental health through connecting with nature & creativity at Trust Links’ Growing Together site in Rochford – a green space & eco-building.
Outside In is an opportunity for young people to have fun, learn new skills & make new friends & create their own outdoor magical performance with Smoking Apples Theatre, an award-winning puppetry & visual theatre company with extensive experience in making innovative outdoor performances with and for young people.
Outside In responds to Elevator Arts’ work with young people affected by poor mental health, intensified by social isolation over successive lockdowns. In the autumn, Elevator Arts we worked with young people who told us about their experiences of the pandemic, things like:
“I didn’t go out during lockdown at all as my mum was shielding. I just stayed in my room watching TV & playing video games.”
Many young people have suffered loss and trauma. A child told Elevator Arts:
“The doctors and nurses couldn’t look after people with cancer because of COVID so my auntie died.”
Outside In aligns with the NHS 5 Steps to Wellbeing & Good Mental Health & will benefit young people’s health through:
- Connecting with others – the project allows young people to make new friends, collaborate & work together.
- Being physically active – through movement, physical theatre, puppetry & energetic theatre games outside in nature.
- Learning new skills – there will be a chance to learn creative & performance skills plus skills to support good mental health.
- Giving to others – share ideas, help peers & create a performance to share with friends & families.
- Paying more attention to the present moment – through finding flow through creative activities, mindfulness & focus exercises.
Now more than ever there is a need for young people to come together, creatively express themselves from the inside out, make connections and build confidence & resilience in safety.
Outside In is free for ages 10-15, but places are limited so booking is essential. Participants will be spending most of their time outside and will need to dress accordingly, remembering waterproofs, sunscreen, and sun hats to ensure preparedness for the changeable weather! Water and snacks will be available, but participants need to bring their own packed lunch.
The project will take place over 5 weekdays from Friday 6th to Thursday 12th August, culminating in a live performance on the evening of the last day.
