For many of us, the world is stressful, hectic, and can seem overwhelming. For that reason, it’s more important than over to have a home that acts not just as shelter from the elements, but as a sanctuary. It can be a place to rest your body, mind, and soul. Even within your home, when you get in from a long day of work, there can be other distractions and stressors, from chiming phones to listening to the news, to having to figure out what to make for dinner. Having a space within your home to meditate and shake off the pressures of the day and recentre yourself can be incredibly valuable to your wellbeing. Of course, there are lots of different types of meditation. Some disciplines stress the need to create your own perfect meditation atmosphere whereas others, such as Transcendental Meditation (TM), suggest the process is so easy you can meditate anywhere providing you are sitting comfortably. Nonetheless, creating our own relaxing sanctuary is a fantastic idea as it will always be there as a fabulous area to escape to whether or not you are meditating.
Natural Light
Your body responds better to natural light than it does to artificial. It can help revive you, keep you focused, and give you a sense of mindfulness.
For personal meditation, having natural light, such as a large window or a skylight can help you be more grounded. If there aren’t rooms in your home that have natural light, you can always square away a section of a larger room, such as the dining or living room, for meditation. While it might seem like too small of a space, you really don’t need much, and having natural light will make your meditation sessions more effective.
Aromas
Aromatherapy during meditation can provide many benefits. For one, it can help soothe your body and your mind to get you more relaxed. You can burn essential oils, simple candles, or incense.

We already talked about how important it is to have natural light. It is also beneficial to have other natural elements in your space.

The sounds of nature from your fountain will go well with the feeling your sand or plants give you. You can create a sense that you are relaxing at a beach or sitting in the middle of a forest. Whatever gets you into the right mindset will work.
As well as helping to create the right atmosphere for meditation, indoor plants also provide a range of other health benefits.
Music
You don’t have to have music when meditating, but many people find it aids relaxation and focus.
If you do play music, make sure that you have relaxing, meditative music that’s playing softly while you relax.
If you live in a home that is surrounded by noise, such as trains, or traffic, or even a schoolyard or park nearby, then music can help drown it out or provide you with something else to focus on. If the music is appropriate, it helps to maintain a tranquil mood.
Make sure that you have enough music to last your entire session, as it can be jarring if it comes to a sudden stop. This will take you out of your meditative state and leave you unsatisfied.
Something Personal
We all have personal things that make us feel grounded or provide us a sense of peace. It might be certain scents, certain objects or items, or even certain sounds. These things can bring our minds to our happy or relaxed places. By keeping these nearby when meditating, they can enhance your serenity and provide a calming and clear atmosphere to open your mind. You can bring in different items or elements each time so that there is always something different to connect with your mind.
