You’ll be amazed at the benefits of adopting Feng Shui tips for working from home
by Jackie Tyrrell of Feng Shui Pathway
In these unusual times, with many of us working from a temporary home office, Feng Shui tips for working from home can help us to arrange our environment in a way that is more supportive emotionally and physically.
My personal experience
For many years, my dining table has been my office. As the children moved out a bedroom finally became free so I could set up my Feng Shui office. It is amazing how being supported by good location, a proper office chair, good furniture placement has brought in amazing support for me both psychologically and practically.
It had me thinking about all those who have been forced to work from home during this pandemic. Many have found themselves in spaces that are not practical or supportive of their wellbeing.
My son worked from his desk in his bedroom or on the dining table for several months which was not ideal, which meant me working in the kitchen on occasion! So, at the start of the lockdown, he was sleeping, waking up and walking over to his desk to start work in the same room.
I could see this was not good for his well-being and he set up an office at the dining room table. He did have a routine of showering and dressing as though he was going to work but nevertheless his commute was less than a minute.
The way it was…
In your normal place of employment, you would be given a desk and an office chair providing good back support. In a good organisation, someone would have checked your seating position and chair height to make sure you were comfortable. You would have allocated breaks and lunchtime and also be able to wander into the staff room or kitchen for a chat.
All this is gone now and possibly neglected, replaced by online meetings where our work colleagues seem a world away.
Working from home does have advantages but can be a lonely place. It seems this is the new normal.
Benefits and challenges of working from home
Working from home presents two major challenges. Effectively separating business and home life, and the lack of stimulating social interaction that you would normally have working in an office with colleagues.
At the same time working from home can bring numerous benefits to a person’s lifestyle and adopting these Feng Shui tips for working from home can help your make the best of it.
So how can Feng Shui help?
Have your home office as far from your bedroom as possible. It is not ideal to work in the same space in which you sleep. So, the dining table may be the best option if you do not have your own office.
Use a chair that is the right height and supports your back. If possible work with a wall behind your back for support and have a good view of the door. If you are lucky enough to be working in one of your personal good compass locations that will give extra support.
Your personal best directions are based on your date of birth using a method that tells you what your Gua number is. This system is called Ba Zhai or Eight Mansions and helps you find the best locations and directions for sleeping, sitting and working. There is a method to calculate your Gua number but you may find it easier to use an online calculator.
If you know your best directions then try to tap into them by locating your working space in a good location and have support from your best directions.
If you do have your own home office, then plan your surroundings with your success, well-being and productivity in mind. Think of specific images, inspirational colours, and appropriate decorative items that make you feel successful, appreciated and happy.
Make sure the quality of air and light in your home office are good. If your brain is starving of oxygen and your body does not get enough natural light, you will not enjoy being in your home office no matter how much you love your job.
Have good lighting and a couple of air-purifying plants such as spider plant, peace lily or snake plant. The energy of the plants will refresh not only the energy of your space but also your own energy.
Position your desk in the so-called Feng Shui command position to attract stronger and more successful energies to your work area. The command position means you have a good view of the door (not directly in front) and your back is supported by the wall. It may not be possible to get a good position and if you find you have to face the wall, use Feng Shui to make the wall “disappear” with the smart use of art.
Keep on top of clutter and don’t let paperwork build up. Clutter can drain your energy and dampen your best intentions. You need to create a clear system and not let clutter ruin your health and your business.
Mark a clutter clearing day on your calendar and you will be surprised how much better, more enthusiastic and energetic you feel the next day.
Crystals placed nearby on your work desk can also bring in support. Honey Calcite for motivation, Fluorite for organisation, Black Tourmaline and Shungite for protection from electro-magnetic fields and Clear Quartz for intention and clarity.
