Unfortunately, when it comes to your children, there have been no exceptions which has included this year many kids have had their sports days cancelled, which is usually one of the highlights of the school year. Your child might have been gutted about not being able to have a competitive sporting day at school, but that doesn’t mean that they have to completely miss out, as you can re-create some old-school fun sports day activities at home, with some of their friends!

Egg and spoon race
We’re going to bet that most households have a few spoons and a few eggs lying around, so this one shouldn’t require too much preparation, although it could get messy! Set out a starting and finishing line in the garden, and make sure that there are enough eggs and spoons to go around. The winner is the first to get to the finish line with their egg still balanced on their spoon. If you don’t fancy wasting eggs or don’t have enough to go around, then you can always substitute these with golf balls!
-
Sack race
Following your egg and spoon race, you could have a sack race, since your start and finish line are already set up and the adrenaline is probably pumping for some more racing action! Depending on what you have to hand, you could either get some potato sacks or use pillowcases. Each competitor will have to step inside the sack and hop their way to victory. Make sure that there’s an adult around to act as the judge and decide who crosses the line first!
-
Obstacle course
This one might sound like it’ll require plenty of equipment, but we reckon that with some imagination, you can use some of the household items that you have lying around. You could use chairs to make a tunnel and you could find some teddys to balance on your kids heads to test their balance. If you have some buckets and sticks, you could even make some hurdles! If you don’t have enough equipment to go around, just build one obstacle course and time each child using a stopwatch.

Medals ceremony
This is a special year for sport, since it’s the year of the Tokyo Olympics! To encourage your child to put their best effort into each event, you could award them with gold, silver and bronze medals. Prior to your sports day, you could make these medals together, using paint or glitter, some cardboard and some ribbons.
As well as a medal, we reckon that chocolate or sweets will go down just as well as prizes! Or better still, maintain the healthy emphasis by providing some healthy snacks for kids.
If your garden is big enough, maybe you can even get the children involved in some gardening as part of the pre-event process!
As we come to the end of the Olympics, now is definitely a good time to maintain the momentum and encourage your kids to get outside and enjoy some fun exercise. So get your imagination working and get a date in the diary for those fun-filled sports day activities. The kids will enjoy it, and we bet you will too!
