A joint investigation by the Independant, Sky News and Greenpeace has discovered that tons of toxic e-waste is going to Africa in flagrant breach of this country’s recycling laws.
Outdated but still usable equipment such as computers, televisions and gadgets can be a great boon to third world countries, but once these items have reached a point of total disrepair they should be dismantled by specialist disposal companies to ensure the toxic heavy metals and other dangerous components are correctly disposed of.
It now appears that many of these items are being shipped to Africa where they are being stripped by young people working on poisenous waste damps. While they are scavaging for raw materials they can sell, they are creating a time bomb of untold damage to themselves and their environment.
