An Effective Solution for Dealing With Home Food Waste
I hate food waste, don’t you? I’m quite good at using up odds and ends loitering in the fridge, but inevitably there will be food waste. And that is even more likely for those of you with big families and busy lives. I’m probably luckier than most as I have a hotbin composter in the garden, but even so, that food collection bin under the sink is always a bone of contention. Let’s be honest, it can be yucky and smelly, can’t it? The good news is, there is now an effective solution for dealing with home food waste.
I was really excited to get an email telling me about Lomi, an innovative kitchen countertop food recycler. Not only will Lomi stop mess and smells, it effortlessly turns 30-50 litres of food waste, including fruit, veggies, meat, dairy and even compostable packaging into a nutrient rich natural fertiliser called Lomi Earth, around 200 grams of coffee like powder, which can be either put into a green garden bin, normal bin (reducing smells, flies and odours) or, even better, used as a fertiliser for plants.
The Lomi solution for dealing with home waste is easy and eco-friendly. At the push of a button, Lomi quietly converts your food waste in just 24 hours, using less energy than leading fridge-freezers.
As well as providing a great solution for dealing with food waste, Lomi is carbon neutral upon delivery with 100% of its manufacturing emissions offset.
And by diverting 100 kgs of food waste from landfill and avoiding 8 kgs of methane emissions with every 100 cycles, Lomi is the only domestic electric appliance with a net positive impact on the environment.
If you love food but hate waste, Lomi is the perfect home food waste solution. But let’s go back to basics. As much as possible, we need to reduce food waste occurring. Just because we have an effective solution for dealing with the waste doesn’t mean we need to take our eye off the ball in terms of reducing waste in the first place. And we probably all know the following, but a reminder never hurts. After all, 60% of food waste in the UK comes from our homes, a shocking statistic!
So, a few tips that will not only help you reduce food waste, but also save you money!
- Avoid impulse purchases by planning your meals for the week and only buying the ingredients you need.
- Store food correctly. You might also consider reducing your fridge temperature down to 3 degrees. The additional cost and energy usage is far outweighed by stopping food from deteriorating so quickly. Don’t forget that a lot of food purchased chilled can be frozen to extend its life.
- Understand the difference between ‘use by’ and ‘best before.’ With the later, smell and taste are always reliable indicators if food is still good to eat.
- Bread is one of the most wasted products in our bins. Check our recipes using stale bread and whizz up slices to use as breadcrumbs and store in the freezer. If you buy more than one loaf at a time, store the others in the freezer and then only take out what you need.
- Be wary of special offers on perishable foods. It’s not a good offer if you end up throwing half of it away!
In conclusion, take steps to reduce your food waste as much as possible. But if you are looking for a viable solution for dealing with the home food waste that’s left. Lomi may just be your best friend!
