You’ve worked hard to get sober though, whether it be having gone through alcoholism rehab or done it alone, and if anyone deserves a holiday it’s you!
There are a number of tricks and tips you can use to ensure it stays that way. Going on holiday for the first time can be tough, in new surroundings, miles from home and so on, but these handy tips will help you make sure you not only don’t touch a drop of alcohol, but you have a great time too…
Plan Ahead
Before you set off on your holiday, take some time to plan ahead. Think about what potential triggers may arise, and how you will cope with them. Make a list of coping strategies and bring it with you, so you can refer to it if needed. This may include calling a sober friend or sponsor, taking some time out to meditate or practice yoga, or finding alternative activities to do instead of drinking.
Set Boundaries
Setting boundaries is an important part of maintaining your sobriety, especially when it comes to social events. Be clear with your travel companions or hosts about your sobriety, and let them know what your boundaries are. This may mean avoiding certain activities or events that may be triggering, or asking for support if you are feeling vulnerable.
Connect with Support
Staying connected with your support network is essential, especially when you are away from home. And even before you go away, let others in your network know you are preparing for your first sober holiday as them may have gems of wisdom to share!
Make sure to bring contact details for your sponsor, therapist, or other members of your recovery community. Consider attending local meetings or connecting with sober groups in the area. This can be a great way to meet like-minded people and to find support during your holiday.
Practice Self-Care
Taking care of yourself is always important, but especially when you are in recovery. Make sure to get enough rest, eat healthy food, and take time out to relax and recharge. Consider bringing some self-care items with you, such as aromatherapy oils, books, or other items that help you to feel calm and centred.
This can also be helped by sticking to a usual self-care routine. So if you practice meditation each morning, ensure you still do that. If yoga is a crucial part of your routine, find time to do it. In fact, you might even want to book yourself a trip to a yoga retreat!
Find Sober Activities
Find those types of fun sober activities that’ll ensure you remain exactly that. Look for sober activities or events that you can enjoy with your travel companions or host. This may include hiking, sightseeing, or trying new hobbies. You may also want to research sober-friendly restaurants or cafes in the area.
You’ll find a wealth of things to do and what’s more, you’ll get to see more of the place you are visiting as you won’t be hungover during the mornings and sat in bars in the afternoons or evenings. It’s a win win!
