Having water on tap, we rarely give thought to the supply side of a critical resource. But despite the wet weather we’re used to, Essex is the driest region in the country. In fact, the sheer number of people in South East England means that there is less water available per person than in Syria or Sudan.
With growing populations and predicted increases in the amount of water we each use, it’s increasingly vital that we use water efficiently. Essex & Suffolk Water offer advice on their website to do just that: http://www.eswater.co.uk/Usingwaterwisely.aspx
However, how best to get this message across? Writtle College students Roseanne Wheeler and Yaya Cheng have been trying an innovative method to encourage people to save water. Their project involved creating photos around the theme of water quality, health and protection of the environment, sustainability and community values. Funded by a bursary from Essex & Suffolk Water and Arts and Business East, in partnership with Chelmsford Borough Council, their aim was to work with the local community and to raise the profile of the arts, as a means of communicating an important environmental message.
