Friary Walled Garden is Maldon’s secret garden. It is an unexpected green oasis of about 1/5th acre behind ancient red brick eallsadjacent to the modern town library.
Access to the garden is either in White Horse Lane, or from the High Street through an alley called Chequer’s Lane between Barclay’s Bank and Iceland Stores.
A wooden entrance door rakes you to a lovingly restored garden with narrow footpaths and box hedges. It is thought the site was cultivated as far back as the thirteenth century when it was occupied by a Carmelite monastery. Many of the plants found there today can be attributed more to the gardeners of the nineteenth century; growing fruit, vegetables and medicinal herbs. The present garden, cared for by the Maldon & Heybridge Horticultural Society, has a formal Georgian layout overlaid by a wild cottage type garden.
The garden is normally open the first Sunday of every month. Entry is free, but on open days volunteers gather for a general working party: visitors are welcome to join in!
Closing time may vary according to the weather and number of volunteers.
