Heritage Open Days – Warley Place Nature Reserve

8th September 2018 @ 10:30 am - 4:30 pm

Ellen Willmott was a horticulturist who developed what was once the beautiful Edwardian gardens of Warley Place that were prized and visited by royalty. Sadly, debts and taxes meant that the property was sold after Miss Willmott’s death and in 1939 developers bulldozed the Victorian Villa, greenhouses and gardens leaving only small parts that you can still see today. After World War Two, the Government declared the land to be part of the Greenbelt and alas the house was also destroyed.

Warley Place is now a 25 acre site which is maintained by Essex Wildlife Trust as a nature reserve.  There are some spectacular flowers to be enjoyed throughout the year, especially in the spring. It is open every day during daylight hours.

As the theme for Heritage Open Days this year is ‘Extraordinary Women’, it seems fitting to celebrate the life of Ellen Willmott and open Warley Place over the weekend as part of the national celebration.

This is a family event, suitable for all ages.

There will be guided tours of the reserve on both days at 10.30, 12.30 and 2.30, and visitors will be taken to some sites which are not normally open to the public. Guide books, etc. will also be on sale

Great Warley Church will also be open on 8 September, 10am – 4pm and on 9 September 12.15 – 4pm. There will be an exhibition in the church about Ellen Willmott and Warley Place.

We hope that many people will be able to visit both locations, and we look forward to welcoming some new friends.
