Introduction to Insects – Thurrock Thameside Nature Park

Insects are fascinating creatures, but most of us know very little about them. Do you know your insects from your arachnids? Or your molluscs from your earthworms? Invertebrates are incredibly diverse and sometimes difficult to identify. Join Rory Dimond on this beginner’s course at Thurrock Thameside Nature Park outlining the major groups of invertebrates in the UK and how to separate them. By the end, you should be able to answer the question, ‘what’s that bug?’.
Suitable fro ages 16+
Please bring the following:
- Pen and paper
- Pots, small jars, nets etc (if you have them)

- 10:00- Welcome/Intro
- 10:05- What are invertebrates and why are they important?
- 10:15 -Introducing UK Invertebrates (activity) 1
- 0:30-The legless to the leggiest (Slugs to centipedes, millipedes to mites and intro to insects)
- 11:00-BREAK
- 11:15- Insects in-depth
- 12:00-LUNCH
- 12:30- We’re going on a Bug Hunt/ Meet the Creatures (Outdoor activity [weather permitting] or otherwise a look through some specimens).
- 13:45-Back for questions/discussion
- 14:00-END
