The Bradwell nuclear power station still remains a blot on the landscape and yet this beautiful area (please see Bradwell Cockle Spit walk) is being threatened with a new build nuclear power station. Several public meetings are being held and, particularly if you live in the area, we suggest you attend one of these if you can. They are listed in environmental eventsÂ
The following is some information relating to nuclear energy received from Friends of the Earth. A full article will follow in due course:
FoE have very large issues against nuclear power as have Greenpeace. Electricity is only 20% of climate change gases, of which less than 20% is from nuclear power, so would only affect 4% of climate change by 2020 if new capacitiy was built. This will be too late, and would divert the vital funding from renewable electricity power investment which can be built far more quickly.Â
The taxpayers picked up a £73billion cost to decommission the current nuclear plants – this has risen to £83billion recently (and likely to go on rising). This extra £10billion would have funded 20% of our electricity from renewable energy by 2020. There is no way to store the radioactive waste safely. The new group Blackwater Against New Nuclear Group (BANNG) are also working to fight any proposal for new build and to try to ensure that the Bradwell site will be safely decommissioned within 25 years to greenfield status, rather than the current plans to leave decommissioning for 100 years plus.Â
