When Roy Hart, Parish Councillor and Owner of Skee-Tex in Battlesbridge, discovered several dead fish in the River Crouch, he decided action was necessary. On further investigation, he found that hundreds of tyres had been dumped in the river.
Â
Having obtained permission from the authorities, he set about clearing the waste himself. With the help of three volunteers, he cleared the polluted river of over 120 dumped tyres.
Â
But Roy was left in absolute amazement when both the Environment Agency and local and county councils refused to pay for the disposal of the massive tyre haul, leaving Roy with potentially a substantial disposal bill: a high price to pay for being a responsible citizen!
Â
Fortunately, another local businessman Edward Fenner, a British Institute of Cleaning Sciences professional, heard the story and felt compelled to offer assistance. Edward, Regional Manager of Secure Site UK, organised a clearance team to attend the next day and removed the tyres for environmental disposal, without charge, in support of Roy and his community spirited volunteers.
Â
Afterwards Roy said “Your company [SecureSiteUK] saved the day. Essex County Council, The Environment Agency or Basildon Council did not want to take responsibility for the tyres. You phoned me straight away and offered to dispose of the tyres. Thank you for your genuine concern for keeping our river clean and pureâ€.

This is a great example of community spirit. It is a shame the Environment Agency and council have not been more supportive especially when volunteers are doing such a great job. Well done..
