The gardens of Writtle University College cover 15 acres with informal lawns with naturalised bulbs and wild flowers. There is a large tree collection, mixed shrubs, herbaceous borders.
The landscaped gardens are designed and built by students as is the new dry/Mediterranean garden. Landscaped themed gardens also include a ‘Centenary’ garden and a Sub-tropical ‘Hot ‘n’ Spicy’ garden.
The main purpose of the grounds at Writtle is to serve the educational and research needs of our students from basic practical provision through to degree level studies.
Other features include:130 landscaped borders, 6 ponds/ water features, Wild Flower Meadows and Woodland Planting. A guided tour leaflet is produced for each NGS open day and various events.
There is some gravel, but the majority of the garden is accessible to all.
Light refreshments are available in The Garden Room on the main campus, and The Lordship Tea Room on the Lordship Campus
