Pilates - Bringing the body and mind together in harmony

The Body Control Pilates ™ method is a body conditioning programme that works in a different way to other fitness techniques. It targets the deep postural muscles and works by building strength from the inside out, rebalancing the body and bringing it into the correct alignment.


It is based on the work of Joseph Pilates who pioneered the methods in 1920’s New York. He worked with actors, dancers and athletes to build strength without adding bulk. The aim was to balance strength with flexibility, achieving a perfect harmony between the mind and the body.

It is an extremely safe and effective programme supported by medical practitioners and suitable for people of all ages and varying degrees of health and fitness.

PilatesBody Control Pilates was founded in London in 1995 and through the work of Lynne Robinson and her colleagues, it has become a household name.

Why is it Effective?
Pilates offers both mental and physical training – teaching you to be in control of your body. The core of the method is “awareness of your own body” and as a result tension can be released and correct postural alignment is taught. Each exercise is built around eight principles:-

Relaxation, Concentration, Coordination, Centering, Alignment, Breathing, Stamina and Flowing movements.

By working on the deep architectural structure of the body “core stability” is achieved and maintained through steadily increasing and flowing movements. Problem areas can be targeted by specific exercises but always in relation to the body as a whole.

Anyone wishing to improve general fitness/posture and appearance
Pregnant women and post pregnancy
Those who suffer from back pain/arthritis/osteoporosis

PilatesProgressive Approach
You are taught movement skills step by step, which ultimately gives you strength and flexibility to perform more advanced traditional pilates exercises. Exercises can be modified for those who suffer with chronic musculoskeletal problems.

As a Physiotherapist, I use it to complement my work as it aids in the rehabilitation of many injuries and provides a long term programme which prevents further injuries and enhances performance.
